Ebonroc and Flamegor Guide: Strategy, Abilities, Loot (Unique to the Season of Mastery)
Ebonroc and Flamegor are two of the three Drake bosses located within Blackwing Lair, along with Firemaw, that you must defeat on your way to confronting Nefarian. However, in the Season of Mastery you must fight these two drakes together, which complicates the encounter substantially. Read on for tips on how to best these two drakes simultaneously.
If you are looking for guides on the regular versions of these drakes, please see our Ebonroc and Flamegor guides instead.
Season of Mastery Disclaimer
Be aware that this particular encounter is unique to the Season of Mastery. Outside of this Season, Ebonroc and Flamegor are considered two separate bosses that do not need to be fought simultaneously. See the links below if you would like to see our guides for these Drakes when fought individually.
Ebonroc and Flamegor Summary by Role
Tanks
- You will need 4 tanks.
- Positioning is key. Get in correct positions and do not move. You will want to bring Flamegor into the corner next to the ramp he comes into the room on, with the tanks making a triangle in front of the boss. Each tank should be spaced from each other, with each having their back against the wall. All three tanks will be taunt swapping frequently, and this is to ensure that the melee do not have to move and can always hit Ebonroc's and Flamegor's backs.
- Your tanks should have a set taunt order, and they should swap every time the current tank gets cursed. If Ebonroc hits a cursed target, he will heal, meaning your tanks need to be very fast at their taunt swaps to limit boss healing. This should not be a concern until Flamegor is dead and the raid is now killing Ebonroc.
- It is highly recommended that your tanks use Onyxia Scale Cloak. Wearing this cloak will remove the DoT and explosive damage that Ebonroc's Shadow of Ebonroc curse will do to your tanks, making it much easier to deal with.
Healers
- There are no special healing requirements; just make sure the tanks are kept alive. If the tanks die and lose threat, it will be hard to recover.
DPS
- Melee should be stacked in a single spot behind the boss and should never have to move. Ranged can be further out, but should also never need to move.
General Tips for Ebonroc and Flamegor
- Getting the bosses positioned correctly is the most important part of the fight. Start with the entire raid sitting behind the ramp to LoS the boss to ensure that tanks can cleanly pull Flamegor into the corner next to the ramp and Ebonroc in the opposite corner toward the beginning of the room.
- The most complicated part of the fight is a taunt swap that requires 4 tanks. Killing Flamegor first allows for you to worry less about Shadow of Ebonroc, as once Flamegor is dead it frees up your other tanks allowing for an easier taunt rotation. Flamegor only has three abilities to consider: his raidwide stacking Fire damage increasing debuff Brand of Flame, Wing Buffet, and an Enrage. For the Wing Buffet, the tanks will just want to taunt swap any time this is cast. Flamegor will also enrage every 10-15 seconds, which just requires a Hunter to use Tranquilizing Shot immediately to remove it.
- When moving on to killing Ebonroc the tanks should have a set rotation, and should taunt the moment the current tank gets the Shadow of Ebonroc curse. This curse will heal Ebonroc if he attacks the afflicted target, so taunt swaps should be as fast as possible.
Strategy for Ebonroc and Flamegor
Ebonroc and Flamegor is a relatively similar encounter to their respective Classic versions, but the major twist in the Season of Mastery version of this encounter is that you will be fighting both dragons at once; both dragons will immediately engage when you pull either of them. Flamegor, who you will be killing first, should be positioned in the corner near the ramp that both dragons will initially be near, while Ebonroc should be brought to the opposite corner of the room and mostly ignored until Flamegor is killed. All members of the raid who are within 30 yards of either boss will receive a debuff increasing their damage taken to each boss' respective damage type. Ebonroc will apply Brand of Shadow increasing your Shadow damage taken and Flamegor will apply Brand of Flame. two tanks and two healers should be assigned to holding Ebonroc away from the raid in the opposite corner while the raid focuses on killing Flamegor first. There needs to be a second set of healers and tanks ready need to swap with this assigned group when they reach four stacks of the stacking vulnerability debuff or the damage dealt to them by Ebonroc will be too high. The rest of the raid needs to remain aware of their respective stacks of this debuff and should look to outrange it (30 yards) and wait until it fades before returning to fighting the bosses. Four is the safest number of stacks but those with heavy Fire Resistance can possibly go higher. The tanks should be positioned with their backs against the wall in the same corner, swapping every time the boss casts Wing Buffet.
Flamegor will also Enrage every 10-15 seconds, which will make him start chain-casting Fire Nova for lots of raid damage. This can be stopped by having a Hunter remove the Enrage using Tranquilizing Shot every time the boss Enrages. As long as the tanks swap and the Hunters are watching for enrages and everyone is aware of their debuff stacks, the boss should not pose any problems. The only other mechanic than Brand of Shadow for Ebonroc is a taunt swap that requires 3 tanks. The tanks should have a set rotation, and should taunt the moment the current tank gets the Shadow of Ebonroc curse. This curse will heal Ebonroc if he attacks the afflicted target, so taunt swaps should be as fast as possible.
Important Abilities
- Wing Buffet will knockback a tank toward the other boss and reduce their threat, so tanks should swap any time this is cast.
- Fire Nova is the AoE ability that Flamegor will cast any time he is Enraged. As long as your Hunters remove the Enrage, this should not be cast more than once per Enrage.
- Brand of Flame Flamegor will apply a stacking debuff increasing the Fire damage taken by anyone within 30 yards of him. This debuff can become quite deadly at higher stacks so make sure to outrange the boss to allow your stacks to drop.
- Brand of Shadow Ebonroc will apply a stacking debuff increasing the Shadow damage taken by anyone within 30 yards of him. This debuff can become quite deadly at higher stacks so make sure to outrange the boss to allow your stacks to drop.
- Shadow of Ebonroc is a curse that will make Ebonroc heal if he attacks the afflicted target. Tanks should swap instantly once the current tank becomes cursed. If you have your Onyxia Scale Cloak, then the curse will only do initial damage, but otherwise will also apply a heavy DoT and will do more damage when it expires.
