Ganyu Guide and Best Builds for Genshin Impact
Ganyu is a 5-star Cryo DPS carry who specializes in charged attacks and has a devastating on-field Elemental Burst ability. Ganyu is built for maximizing her damage output with little regard to any defensive stats.
Strengths and Weaknesses
- F2P options are great
- Simple Playstyle
- Safe with Ranged Gameplay
- Extremely High DPS
- Must use charged shots
- Teammates require heavy investment
- High energy costs
Ganyu Main DPS
Ganyu slays the majority of main story content and strolls through Abyss with little concern when built correctly. She is all about Cryo damage and crushing Frozen enemies with charged shots from her bow. One of the best on-field DSPers in the game for both single target and AoE damage, she is also an extremely versatile team builder, as she can excel in many different setups.

Ganyu's 5-star first weapon, The First Great Magic, was chosen to focus on buffing her charged attacks as well as using the skill of the bow for a 'Gimmick' stack. These stacks come from team members who are the same element as her; this means having 2 Cryo team members is ideal. This also activates a Cryo Resonance for more CRIT Rate, benefiting her damage further. However, if you choose not to use the same elemental team members, you still gain a buff for movement speed which helps Ganyu stay our of danger and at range throughout a fight. Our alternative 5-star bow picks are also focused around Ganyu's Charged Attacks, elemental damage or attack power. For the 4-star weapon picks, we follow the same pattern focusing on what will best amplify Ganyu's damage capabilities the best.
Update 5.0 added the Chain Breaker bow as another strong alternative for Ganyu to stack ATK % for close to a 30% increase on a Rank 5 version of the bow - which can be farmed for outside of wishes. However, the drawback to this weapon is the need to use different elemental characters or Natlan specific characters in your party makeup. While there are certain combinations that support this, Ganyu does gain significant benefits from stacking at least 1 other Cryo member and damage buffers for the majority of her top-tier builds.
Ganyu's Artifacts will push for pure damage sub-stats on almost every piece, but you must first meet her Energy Recharge threshold of around 130%-150%. Once you have attained that requirement, the rest of her sub stats will be chosen to amplify her DPS, starting with her CRIT DMG and CRIT Rate stats. Every defensive stat becomes null for her, as once she scales her DPS high enough, she kills so fast that keeping her alive is relatively simple. As for her Artifacts sets, Shimenawa's Reminiscence is arguably the best choice in all situations due to the massive increase in her Charged Attack bonus.
Combos and How to Play Ganyu
Ganyu is devastating on the battlefield, commanding her Elemental Abilities to not just encase everyone in ice, but her charged attacks with her bow are also incredibly powerful. Whether Ganyu is attached to a Freeze team, a Melt team or some kind of Mono-DPS team with buffers, she tends to follow the same pattern; primarily focusing on her Burst ability and using her Charged Attacks during its recharge phase. Ganyu's Elemental Skill, Trail of the Qilin, is mainly used for energy generation and a taunt to keep her free to fire charged attacks at her enemies.
Overall, no matter what team Ganyu is a part of, she will always keep her Elemental Burst, Celestial Shower, to trigger huge AoE Elemental Reactions off her teammates abilities, then hammer the enemies with some charge shots before rotating back through her team's rotation. Ganyu's Elemental Burst is a snapshot of her stats on cast, so you want to activate as many buffs as you can before triggering the skill. Another important thing to note about this skill, is that your buffed damage that is taken at the start of the skill cast will be carried throughout the skills duration regardless of if the buffs fall off of Ganyu or other characters.
Ganyu's Best Team Comps
As we have previously mentioned, Ganyu will be an on-field DSPer with team compositions built around her damage capabilities.
Ganyu Double Cryo Team
Main DPS | Cryo Buffer | Buffer/Healer | Shielder |
---|---|---|---|
Ganyu | Shenhe | Xilonen | Zhongli |
This new team takes advantage of the double Resistance shred from both Xilonen and Zhongli. It also uses the same double Cryo Resonance bonus for more CRIT Rate against Frozen or Cryo affected enemies. Both Xilonen and Shenhe grant Ganyu a strong ATK buff for use with her charged attacks, while Zhongli keeps Ganyu free from interruption and damage. This team packs a ton of damage, with strong defenses and healing — all with an easy rotation and relaxed gameplay of using Ganyu's charged attacks as your primary damage.
4-star Double Cryo Team
Main DPS | Sub DPS | Sub DPS | Shielder - Cryo |
---|---|---|---|
Ganyu | Xingqiu | Fischl | Diona |
This 4-star focused Double Cryo team uses a great mix of Elemental Reactions, shielding and some limited healing. Xingqiu and Fischl's off-field abilities really shine here, offering Ganyu some excellent synergy with each of their elements. This allows us the ability to Freeze or Superconduct enemies on the battlefield with Ganyu's Elemental Burst, Celestial Shower. Overall, this is a very simple playstyle; keep Fischl's Oz out on the field and use Xingqui/Ganyu combos to Freeze enemies. All the while, Diona can place a shield on the team. This is a great F2P build if you were lucky enough to get Ganyu on the gacha pull.
Ganyu Perma-Freeze Team
Main DPS - Cryo | Hydro | Support | Shielder - Cryo |
---|---|---|---|
Ganyu | Mona | Diona |
This Perma-Freeze team can keep enemies frozen in ice with good rotational play as well as dish out some solid damage. Mona is our source of Hydro on the battlefield, and when assisted by Venti or Kaedehara Kazuha's abilities, you can apply the Hydro quite effectively. Mona's Elemental Burst can also provide a solid DMG increase to the skill that breaks the Illusionary Bubble it creates, so be sure to follow it up with Ganyu's Elemental Burst, Celestial Shower, to maximize your damage. Venti or Kazuha are not only key to helping apply our Hydro element, but can help to group enemies together. They can also provide some Elemental RES Shred if equipped with the Viridescent Venerer set. Lastly, we have Diona included in this team for shielding and healing, but we also use her as as additional application of Cryo to keep enemies frozen for as long as possible.
Ganyu Melt Team
Main DPS | Sub DPS | Buffer | Shielder |
---|---|---|---|
Ganyu | Kaedehara Kazuha | Bennett | Zhongli |
This Melt team is energy hungry. You will need to stack Energy Recharge on both Kazuha and Bennett to assist with the overall energy consumption of this build, but once it is working its damage is incredible. First, we start off with shields from our high HP build Zhongli. Then, follow the simple rotation below.
- Ganyu's Elemental Skill Trail of the Qilin
- Kazuha's Elemental Skill Chihayaburu
- Bennett's Elemental Burst Fantastic Voyage
- Kazuha's Elemental Burst Kazuha Slash
- Ganyu's Elemental Burst Celestial Shower
Now hammer everything with Ganyu's Charged Attack from her bow. This basic pattern can be reset at any point by going back to Zhongli and using his Elemental Burst for a meteor if you make a mistake.
Ganyu's Ascensions, Talents, and Constellations

Ganyu's Talents
Listed below is each talent and a brief explanation of how they work.

---|---|---|
Normal | Normal Attack: Liutian Archery | Performs up to 6 consecutive attacks with a bow. Charged attacks hit for Cryo DMG and have two levels of charge with different effects. Elemental Skill | Trail of the Qilin | Ganyu dashes backwards and deals AoE Cryo DMG that leaves behind an Ice Lotus. This Ice Lotus can taunt opponents for a set duration based on Ganyu's Max HP, once the Ice Lotus is destroyed or its duration is over the Lotus will explode for another round of AoE DMG Cryo . |
Elemental Burst | Celestial Shower | Summons a Sacred Cryo Pearl that rains down shards of ice, striking opponents for high amounts of Cryo DMG in a large AoE ring. |
To upgrade a single talent to level 10, it costs:
