Retribution Paladin in The War Within Mythic+
Retribution's strengths are having access to extremely frequent burst cooldowns through Radiant Glory and providing a wide array of group utility. Its biggest weakness is its single-target damage, which is no longer completely awful but is still relatively unimpressive when taking AoE talents.

Best Mythic+ Talent Builds for Retribution Paladin
Best Mythic+ Templar Talent Build for Retribution Paladin
Templar will perform slightly above Herald of the Sun in most cases.
This build is focused on AoE damage, with a few concessions to keep single target output at a reasonable level.
Use the 'Export Talents' button to import the best build directly into your game.
Best Mythic+ Herald of the Sun Talent Build for Retribution Paladin
Herald of the Sun rivals Templar on cleave damage but tends to perform worse on single-target and burst damage.
This build is focused on AoE damage, with a few concessions to keep single target output at a reasonable level.
Use the 'Export Talents' button to import the best build directly into your game.
Retribution Paladin Mythic+ Build Options
The main talent swap you can make with these builds is swapping out Execution Sentence for another talent like Final Reckoning. Execution Sentence works very well with Radiant Glory, while Final Reckoning does not since it's much more awkward to use around Crusade stacks and is more likely to become desynced. Retribution's primary shortfall in damage in Mythic+ is also single-target, which Execution Sentence helps alleviate, so Execution Sentence is, in general, going to be the best overall option to use. However, if you decide that you want to give up that single-target strength and strong synergy for a bit more AoE, then this is a reasonable swap to make.

Utility of Retribution Paladin in The War Within
Interrupts, Stuns, and Stops
- Rebuke is your regular short cooldown interrupt. Use it first if you need to interrupt spellcasting.
- Hammer of Justice is a single-target stun with a very long 6-second duration. Use it often to stun-casting mobs that you cannot interrupt with Rebuke.
- Blinding Light can be used to disorient enemies within 10 yards. This can be used as an AoE interrupt for crowd-controllable casting enemies.
- With a 5-second duration, Wake of Ashes is a very potent AoE stun, but it only works against Demon and Undead enemies.
- Repentance can be used to hinder a single Humanoid, Demon, Undead, Dragonkin, or Giant-type enemy within 30 yards until you attack it. Cast it if you want to move around or delay dealing with a particularly dangerous mob. Incapacitating the leader of a patrolling group will also stop the entire group from moving. Remember that you pull aggro and enter combat if you move too close to the incapacitated target.
- Turn Evil fears an Undead, Aberration, or Demon target within 20 yards for up to 40 sec.
Other Utility
- Intercession allows you to bring an ally back to life during combat.
- Activate Devotion Aura to reduce all damage taken by your group by 3%.
- Cleanse Toxins can remove all Poison and Disease effects from a group member.
- Blessing of Protection removes bleeds and other Physical damage effects. Additionally, it grants your target immunity to Physical damage and harmful effects for 10 seconds. It is often used on group members who pulled aggro from the tank via damage or healing.
- Blessing of Sacrifice reduces damage taken by a party member by 30%, but you suffer 100% of damage prevented. It lasts 12 seconds, or until transferred damage would cause you to fall below 20% health. Communicate with your tank and healer to plan when to use this.
- Blessing of Freedom removes and prevents movement-impairing effects for 8 seconds.
- Lay on Hands heals a friendly target for an amount equal to your maximum Health.
- Word of Glory can also be used as a heal if necessary, but as it costs Holy Power, you will lose a significant amount of damage if you cast it too frequently.

This section has Retribution-specific tips and tricks that may not seem obvious for all dungeons' bosses and mobs.
Mythic+ Tips for Retribution Paladin in The War Within Season 1
Bosses
- Ki'katal the Harvester
- Stand in black blood during Cosmic Singularity to root yourself to prevent being sucked in. Once it is over, you can remove the root with Blessing of Freedom or by using Rebuke or Hammer of Justice on the slime.
- Cleanse Toxins will remove Cultivated Poisons. Only use it if the waves that will spawn will not hit other group members.
Trash
- If you stand in black blood, the root effect can be removed the same way it is on the boss.
- Many enemies apply Poison debuff effects. These can all be removed with Cleanse Toxins.
Bosses
- The Coaglamation
- You will need to soak orbs of black blood that move towards the boss. These will apply a healing absorption debuff; if your healer needs help removing this effect, healing abilities like Word of Glory and Lay on Hands can be useful.
- Izo, the Grand Splicer
- Blessing of Freedom can be used to remove the roots from Umbral Weave.
Trash

- Surgeon Stitchflesh

- Blessing of Freedom will remove Frozen Binds, but can also prevent the application entirely if it is cast before the debuff is applied.
- Divine Shield will prevent Dark Exile from moving you to the lower area.

- Many enemies are undead, and will be stunned by Wake of Ashes. You should try to not hold it as it represents a significant amount of your damage, but be aware of the potential for diminishing returns on stun effects.

Affix Tips, Tricks and Management for Retribution Paladin in The War Within Season 1
This section has Retribution-specific tips for dealing with the various affixes of Mythic+. If you want general guides for each of our Dungeons or Mythic+ in general, check out our dedicated page below.
Affix Guide for Retribution Paladin in The War Within
Ascendant Affix Management for Retribution Paladin
Blinding Light is our only AoE stop that will deal with the orbs. You can use single-target CC and interrupts like Hammer of Justice and Rebuke if necessary too.
Voidbound Affix Management for Retribution Paladin
Just focus down the Void Emissary when it spawns. You will not need to take any different talents for this.
Oblivion Affix Management for Retribution Paladin
Run around picking orbs up when they spawn. Try to keep a charge of Divine Steed available for this.
Devour Affix Management for Retribution Paladin
Cleanse Toxins and healing abilities like Word of Glory and Lay on Hands can be used to remove this debuff.
How To Sim Mythic+ for Retribution Paladin
Simming for Mythic+ can be tricky as the pull cadence for dungeons can differ drastically depending on the key level and group composition. In general Dungeon Slice is going to be a decent approximation for most average dungeons and feature a good mix of single-target and AoE. Custom MDT sims are an interesting alternative that can be useful if you want to model a specific dungeon, but be warned that custom raid events for Retribution sims are not currently supported, so you will need to doublecheck that no weird behaviour is being caused by its settings yourself.
On our Gear Page below, we have compiled BiS items for Retribution Paladin that also apply to Mythic+.
