Rogue Class Overview

At home in the shadows and skilled at disappearing from sight, the Rogues of Azeroth are most comfortable when acting in the background. Twisting events to their favor, striking only when advantage is greatest: this is where a Rogue excels. With their cunning tricks, physical abilities, and mastery of concealment and disguise, Rogues have no trouble finding employment as thieves, cutthroats, spies, and assassins.

Introduction to Rogue in Vanilla World of Warcraft

Rogue Class Crest Cataclysm Guide Masters of stealth and adept users of all types of poison, the Rogue is a melee-based DPS class in World of Warcraft. Depending on how you prefer to play the game or the class fantasy you're looking for, Rogue comes with three Specializations: Assassination, Combat, and Subtlety. Regardless of Specialization or playstyle, all Rogues use Energy and Combo Points as a resource.

  • Assassination — This specialization focuses on increasing the burst damage of the Rogue, ensuring that defeating their foes requires as little time as possible.
  • Combat — This specialization focuses on enhancing a Rogue's capabilities in extended fights. While they normally fight from the shadows, Combat Rogues are equipped to fight just as proficiently outside of stealth.
  • Subtlety — This specialization enhances a Rogue's abilities within stealth, avoiding direct combat when possible.

Due to the differences between Classic and modern World of Warcraft, players won't spec completely into a specific Specialization. For Rogue, playstyle will be dependent on your weapon of choice, either Swords or Daggers. For a more in depth look at what this looks like, head over to our detailed Rogue Guide linked below.

If you are still deciding if the Rogue class is the proper choice for you, feel free to check out the video below from WillE, an avid player and long time content creator for World of Warcraft! This video will give you a solid overview of what Rogue is like to level and what it excels at in endgame content and PvP.
