Use Dyes to Change the Colour of Your Gear in FFXIV

The Dye system allows players to change the colour palette of specific gear, allowing players to express themselves in different ways and become the ultimate Fashion Leader of Eorzea!

In addition to changing the colour of equipment, you can wholly change their appearance! These two systems work in tandem, so you can change both the colour and appearance of your gear! To learn more about Glamour, visit our dedicated page explaining how to change the appearance of your gear.

To unlock glamour, you must first complete a sidequest - either "Color Your World", from Swyrgeim at Vesper Bay in Western Thanalan, or "A Self-improving Man" from Wiscard in Mor Dhona. These are very simple quests and take no time at all to complete. It is likely you run into the one in Vesper Bay first. The Orange Juice required for "Color Your World" can be purchased from the Merchant and Mender NPC right beside Swyrgeim.

In order to dye a piece of gear, you must have a dye and an item you wish to dye. Highlight the item and select Dye from the subcommands. Select the dye you wish to use; you can preview how the item will dye in the menu. You can choose which channel you wish to apply your dye on. In addition, you can use the menu options to show all equipped gear and preview all dyeable gear bwith the selected dye. Once you are sure of your selection, press Dye to change the colour of the gear!

Keep in mind that not all gear can be dyed. If a piece of equipment can be dyed, it will have a circle on the top right of the icon indicating as such.

You can also remove dye from an item in the Dye menu. Select the first colour palette and the first option will be to remove the dye. This costs one Terebinth, and will return the item to its original colour. You can purchase Terebinth from vendors in major cities.

Dyes come from a variety of places across Eorzea, and some are very rare. Even so, you can view all dyes when dyeing a piece of equipment. Below is a list of places dyes can be acquired from.

• Purchased from vendors across Eorzea;
• Crafted by any crafter that meets the level requirement;
• Rewarded from content such as Ishgardian Restoration;
• Rewarded from dungeon treasure chests;
• Rewarded from sidequests;
• Purchased on the Marketboard from other players with gil;
• Purchased with real money on the FFXIV Online Store;
• Rewarded from a Venture Coffer, a rare drop from Quick Exploration Ventures.

For most special dyes, there are General-purpose variants. The regular dyes are untradeable, but General-purpose dyes are tradeable. Both variants dye the same. You can purchase special dyes from the FFXIV Online Store for real money, but they can be acquired in-game albeit at a rare rate.
